Reviews:

This book was written by one of true giants in the field of retina. It is a little out-dated now, in regards to surgical aspects of RD repairs, but the information in this book is golden. Many of the chapters focus on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of retinal detachment as opposed to just being a book on retinal detachment surgery.I found the descriptions and drawings to be very good. Chapter after chapter focuses on various aspects of vitreous and vitreoretinal degeneration. All of this leads up to retinal detachment, its features, complicating aspects, and surgical repair. There is some overlap between the chapters. But, there is no other source I have come across that goes into as much detail. At times, the descriptions are very long-winded...seriously. It can get so wordy and focused on never before heard minutia that I wonder at times if the details and distinctions being described exist only in the authors' mind as opposed to being based on well accepted facts.Nevertheless, it is an interesting read. While some things must be taken with a grain of salt, I have learned a lot from it and am glad I bought it. It complements my collection well, with other opinionated books by authors such as Steve Charles, Bill Freeman, and Ingrid Kressig. The Ryan text, it seems to me, makes more of an attempt to be concise and objective. I dont think the second edition of Schepens was widely distributed and so I would recommened picking it up while it is still available.
